Welcome To Jenux!

This file will list the shortcut keys available in the mate desktop, as well as give a brief overview of your new system.

Desktop overview:

The mate desktop contains two main elements, the panel and the desktop. You can cycle through these elements by holding down control and alt, and tapping tab to go forward and shift tab to go backward. As you move, if you are using the orca screen reader, the currently selected element will be spoken. To set focus to the selected element in order to access its controls, release control and alt. By default, the desktop, arranged in a grid, contains these four elements:
Computer, contains links to mounted volumes and other attached storage devices
User's home, where User is replaced with your login name, contains your personal files, as well as configuration files for the desktop and installed applications. You have permission to view and edit everything in this directory with no restrictions
Network Servers, contains a searchable view of file shares and other resources on your network. You will most likely need permission from the owner of the resource to access it
Trash, a virtual file system that is used to store deleted files. Note that if using the terminal rather than the GUI file manager to remove files or directories, the trash is bypassed, making it extremely difficult to recover deleted files. To pull up a context menu related to the current item, the equivalent of a right click on said item, focus on an item with your arrow keys and hold down shift and tap f10. To perform the equivalent of a right click on an empty area of the desktop, which, for example, allows you to add custom shortcuts, empty folders, etc, hold down control and tap f10.

Panel Overview:

The Mate desktop contains two panels, top and bottom. As previously mentioned, to switch between the panels and the desktop, hold down control and alt, and tap tab or shift tab to move forward and backward, respectively. The panels can be customized in various ways, such as changing the order of items, visual size of the panel,, or even adding and removing new items or entire panels by using the same context menu procedure as for the desktop, i.e. Control f10 for panel context menu, shift f10 for item specific context menu. To avoid getting stuck inside groups of items when navigating in panels, I would recommend using shift tab and cycling backward through items.

Top Panel:

The top panel contains, from left to right:
Main menu bar, accessible with alt+f1, allows you to start applications by category, go to different places, in your file system including local and remote disks, and adjust settings, add and remove software, access help, log out of your graphical session, or power off your system.
Notification Area, which contains the clock, Bluetooth manager, networking options, sound settings, software updater, etc

Bottom Panel:

By default, the bottom panel shows a list of open windows, as well as a workspace switcher, which allows you to group your open windows into multiple virtual desktops.
